A
native of North Carolina, pianist Elizabeth Barnes has been
teaching and performing for 20 years. She holds a B.A. in
Performance and has continued her study of music through the
years. Elizabeth has studied privately with several well-known
jazz artists including John Toomey, Eddie Williams and avant-garde
pianist, Joel Futterman. She has also studied classical composition
extensively with acclaimed contemporary composer Adolphus
Hailstork.
Before moving to Waynesboro with her husband, Fred Herrmann
and son, Joshua, Elizabeth was the Director of the Jazz Studies
Program at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk,
VA, where she instructed in the areas of jazz and classical
theory, improvisation, jazz literature and directed several
award winning ensembles. Elizabeth has performed extensively
as a solo jazz pianist as well as with small ensembles and
big bands. She has shared the stage with such jazz greats
as Frank Foster, Ingrid Jensen and Tommy Newsom.
Elizabeth is currently teaching privately and performing
in this area. She is a member of the International Association
of Jazz Educators and continues her own music education through
various resources.
